    Rules, Manuals, and Guides

    This page

    • lists the rules that apply to baseball in Queensland,

    • links to some study guides to help learn the rules, and

    • talks about the 2-umpire, and higher, systems.

    Rules

The rules that apply in Australia are the Official Australian Baseball Rules (OABR), which can be purchased from a number of sources including the ABF.  They are similar to the MLB Official Baseball Rules (OBR - found here) but there are some important differences (e.g., the OBR were changed for the 2010 to allow a pitcher to 'go to his mouth' within the 18-foot pitcher's mound so long as he wiped off - but the OABR do not allow this).

Baseball in Queensland is further governed by:

    • the Baseball Queensland Rules (download 2010/11 rules here, 172kB PDF), and
    • for play within the Greater Brisbane area by the GBL By-laws (download 2010/11 by-laws here, 270kB Word document).

    Study guides

For those who wish to study the rules in preparation for the Level 1 umpire exam there are a number of useful study guides. Be aware that some may be out-of-date or refer to other rule sets (e.g., MLB OBR).

This page from the WA Baseball Umpire's Association has about 20 scenarios, with answers

    Umpiring systems

    2-Umpire system

The basic umpiring 'unit' is the 2-umpire system. This is briefly explained in the ABF Level 1 Umpiring Manual (download here, 770kB PDF).

The Baseball Umpires Association of Victoria has a page devoted to umpire positioning scenarios in the 2-umpire system.

There are also a number of books covering baseball umpiring and the 2-umpire system.

A thorough explanation is given in the PBUC Manual for the 2-Umpire System. The Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation is responsible for the training and evaluation of all umpires in the Minor League Baseball system throughout the United States and Canada.

A companion book to the 'red book' is the PBUC Umpire Manual.

Both can be purchased through the ABF or the QBUA.

    3-umpire system

The 3-umpire system is used for higher level games in Australia (e.g., ABL games) and national tournaments. The ABF guide for the 3-umpire can be downloaded here (350kB, PDF).
